Update your room with a new ceiling light + my giveaway with First Choice Lighting

Adding a new ceiling light is possibly one of the quickest way of updating the look of any room. And it doesn’t have to cost a fortune either. Sometimes swapping a simple lamp shade for something a little bit more exciting is all your room might need. In fact if your lamps are anything but exciting you should swap them all now! And I can get you to a good start as lovely people from First Choice Lighting have kindly agreed to give away one of their very popular Copper Wire Ceiling Lamp to one lucky winner! So scroll to the end of this post to find out how to enter or read on for some top tips on the perfect lighting for your home.

How to update a room with a new lamp?

Is the lighting in your home exactly the same as when you moved in ten years ago? Yes? Don’t worry, you’re not the only one! Lighting is one of those things that are often left untouched or even forgotten after we move into a new home. Why? I’m all for Do It Yourself approach to the design but when it comes to certain things like plumbing or electrics, these are better left for the professionals. And let’s be honest here, that can be really expensive!

As much as we can’t put a price on our safety and some things just need to be done regardless of the cost, we do can put a price on the design of our new lighting. And that’s where we often skimp on. Or just simply skip the cost all together and live with whatever we inherited with the house…

Sounds familiar?

No surprise here as lighting is often overlooked. And that is for many reasons, not just financial ones. But make sure that you don’t add any reasons to it. There is quite a lot you can to do update your room even without the need to rip the whole house apart in order to install you electrics in those right places.  Having it in the “wrong places” is not the end of the world. You just need to know how to work with it! Extension leads, long cables and battery operated task lamps will come in handy.

Adding new ceiling light to the room

Start with your main light. It’s the one that is “dangling” from the ceiling in the centre of the room. Look at it from the distance… is the size of your lamp adequate to the size of the room? Chances are that it is not! And that’s the first mistake people make. Ceiling light that is too small or too big for the room can completely ruin the whole look… even if the rest of the room is perfectly design!

There is no perfect design if the lighting isn’t perfect!

If the lamp is too small it will just disappear in your large room. If it is too big it will overshadow the other design elements that you would rather have people noticing.

Also you need to make sure that your ceiling light is not hung too low. That is for a very simple reason – to avoid bumps to your head.

But don’t go from one extreme to the other and don’t hang your new lamp too high. It will look very odd! Find the perfect middle, based on the height of your room and the height of all your home dwellers! The position of the lamp will be important too. Those hung directly over the dining table are allowed to be couple of inches lower than the ones dangling in the middle of your living room.

Positioning your new ceiling light

Your ceiling light does not have to be exactly in the middle of the room! Unless you want it be in the middle of the room, that is! It is usually positioned in the centre to distribute light equally. If you feel that your room (or you) would benefit from having the ceiling light above the seating area in the corner of the room, then move it there! Just make sure you make up for the poor light distribution by adding some  table or floor lamps to the other side of the room. Don’t have any table lamps in the room? Don’t even start me on that! This is another mistake that people make and one I cannot understand.

Every room needs three types of lighting: ambient, decorative and task lighting. (If you want to learn a little bit more about them, go to my post about home lighting ideas here.)

And the last piece of advice…

Your ceiling light can be the feature of the room! With so many beautiful lamps to choose from, it would be almost a crime to go for one that isn’t. Don’t shy away from big statement pieces. Or if your room isn’t big enough go for simple but beautifully designed lamps that will still make a statement in the room, without it being too overwhelming.

And now it’s time to give one lucky reader a chance to win exactly that! Simple and beautifully designed Copper Wire Ceiling Light (measuring 380mm) from First Choice Lighting!

I’ve been looking at lighting this morning so this is incredibly timely for me. Living in a Victorian cottage though I have low ceilings and that rules our so many pendants – it’s a minefield.

Oh, I feel your pain. The ceilings in our house are very low and this pendant would actually not be suitable for us. I didn’t stop me from hanging not one but three massive bulb lights in our living room, we have to apologise our tall(ish) friends about it the minute they walk into our house ??
