My easy homemade Christmas decorations

Christmas right? When did that happen? And where another year of my life has gone? But I’m not here to talk about my life. I already did that in my last post. Today I’m bringing you my homemade Christmas decorations ideas. Although none of them will be featured in our house until the very Christmas Day! The reason? Walls are down, floors are out and a thick blanket of dust everywhere. And I’m sitting here, surrounded by piles of furniture with a cup of tea, Baileys chocolate, singing Christmas songs and creating homemade Christmas decorations… That’s the magic of Christmas! But obviously I’m gonna have to start on some “more important jobs” soon, so I’m actually bringing you just one new Christmas decoration and another two are from last years’ post (but because no one was really reading my blog back then, it’s ok if I share them with you again). So let’s crack on…

My homemade Christmas decorations

Wood peg stars

So my wood peg stars have been the feature of my Christmas tree for the past few years now. They are a little bit fiddly, but only because I forgot to buy a good quick drying glue (again!) and used just PVA glue instead (again!) But if you have a glue that is much better than mine, you should have them ready and dangling on your tree in no time.

So what you will need to make your wood peg stars:

  • wooden pegs (you can get them from Wilko for £1 per pack of 36)
  • spray paint (or any paint really)
  • hot glue gun or any good quick drying glue
  • a cup of something nice and warm to drink and a chocolate (don’t even start without those two)
  • Christmas songs on repeat (optional)

You need to start by removing the metal bits from the pegs. You can do it by gently twisting two sides of each peg in opposite directions. Discard all the metal bits that you’ve separated from the pegs as you won’t be needing them.

Now you can start some glueing. Take two halfs, apply some glue on to the flat sides of the pegs and stick them together.

Now carry on with the rest of the peg’s pieces. At this stage I gave up with my hot blue gun and decided to give a PVA glue a go. (Note to myself and all of you: don’t buy the cheapest hot glue gun as they don’t have enough power to heat up the glue properly, urgh…)

Start making the shape of a star by glueing together two pieces (bottom to bottom). Then add another two and you’ll have a cross.  Then another two… and another two. See where I’m going?

After that all that’s left to do is to paint your wood peg stars with spray paint (easy option) or any other paint (less easy option). Either way they will look great, but spray paint will save you lots of time. I had my Rust-Oleum paint left from my previous projects and the Chrome Effect one I got from Lidl for just £2.99!  And here’s how my wood peg stars look this year (unfortunately not dangling on the tree yet):

Wool snowflakes

Here’s how they looked on my tree last year. And although I’m not making any new ones this year, I will most certainly reuse them. Because how could I not! They are so cute! And you’ll be happy to know that all you need is some wool and some toilet paper rolls (one paper roll = one snowflake). So go on, stock up on those toilet paper rolls and get crafty. Those wool snowflakes are damn so pretty and in fact very easy to make. Just check out my last year’s Christmas post here for full instruction.

Christmas art

This one is a no brainer! Honestly, homemade Christmas decorations can’t get easier than this! So if you think you need to swap your art for something more Christmesy – this is it! Literally just slap some paint on any flat christmas decoration and use it as a stamp. Stamp! Stamp! And you just stamped your way to Christmas! The instruction is in my last year’s post but I don’t think you will be needing that (although you’re always welcome to explore my blog a little bit more).

And here’s just a little extra for you. How cute are these little fellas? And they are nothing more than two socks filled with some rice! (plus some decoration, at the end, every snowman needs a scarf and a pom pom hat right?) I made these few years ago and you’ll be happy to know I used fresh pair of socks, nothing less! (I’m sorry for such crap photos, but back then I didn’t know what I was doing).

So, here you have it! Your homemade Christmas decorations for your homemade Christmas! I really hope you’ll have a good one! And wish you the most magical Christmas time! As for me, I wish that at least we’ll have a Christmas tree this year!!!

I know I’m late, but I’m impressed with how resourceful you are. And the little sock snowmen are so cute!
