My DIY art!

OK, let’s get things straight. By “this art is on fire” I mean LITERALLY ON FIRE! So not for the faint hearted and definitely not for those of you who don’t like the smell of smoke! Brace yourself, as there will be a lot of it! But on the positive side, you don’t need any skills for this DIY ART and in fact you might not even need to spend a single penny. That’s if you’re a smoker. Or if you have recently quit smoking and you don’t know what to do with those few boxes of matches that are still in your drawer. (And hey, no judging here, I’m an ex smoker myself). In any other case you may have to spend couple of pounds on this DIY art top!ย  But I guess you might already have everything in the house.

And here’s exactly what you’ll need for this HOT DIY ART:

diy art

10 packs of matches

a lightener

a piece of card

PVA glue

ruler and a pencil

acrylic paint and a fine paintbrush (optional)

How to:

Start by marking a centre of the card as that will be the centre of your art as well. Use your ruler and pencil for that.

Now, remember when your mum was telling you: “never play with the fire”? Well, if you’re reading this blog, I guess you’re big enough to don’t listen to your mum (but just this one time, remember that WE mums are always right!)

Start lighting the matches but don’t let them burn completely. You only need to burn the tip of the matches, just so they get this nice black colour. You will need quite a lot of them so make sure you have a cup of tea with you!

Remember to get rid of those burnt tips of the matches by gently rubbing them on the piece of an old chopping board or something else you’re not gonna use any more.

When you think you might have enough matches you can start arranging them on your card. PVA glue should be enough for the job. And definitely don’t try to use a hot glue gun, it will get cold to quickly leaving a dried glue blob on your cardย  (and don’t ask why I know that?!)

how to diy art

Keep adding the matches in four directions to create something that looks a little bit like a star. And obviously don’t forget to glue the card first.

When you have an almost star shape you can start adding even more matches to your DIY art. To create more effects try to turn some of the matches with the burnt tips inwards. Like this:

When it’s all finished and dry you can accentuate the shape of the artย  by painting some chevrons. Or you can leave it as it is if you prefer. You should end up with something looking like this:

I remember seeing this on your Instagram, it’s literally the most amazing DIY artwork, how on earth did you come up with the idea?! It’s incredible to think that a few matches could create something so absolutely stunning. Thank you so much for linking up with #HomeEtc X

Thank you so much for such nice words. I saw a photo of something similar on Pinterest but couldn’t find anything more related to that pin so decided to have a go myself. But someone actually told me that it was a thing back in the 80s’. I think I completely missed that back then ? or maybe I was too little to play with matches ???

Ha ha… I think you’re the first person I know to admit to like the smell of burnt matches ๐Ÿ™‚ I actually did not like this part, although I have to say there was something that made me feel like a 1920′ film star (but in my tracksuit instead of a fancy dress ๐Ÿ™‚ )

Here I am, late as usual. When I first saw the final piece on your Instagram I thought it was some kind of tribal art. It looks great! I like the subtle ombre effect and the geometric pattern. Maybe next time you’ll show us what happened with the hot glue gun… ?

I love the results and This looks fun to do but I just have to remember to switch off the smoke alarms when doing it.

How cool is this?! I feel like it would be a total disaster if I attempted it myself, but it definitely looks amazing.

Just love this, so creative! It hate to think how long it took you to burn all those matches, but itโ€™s worth it because it looks awesome. Iโ€™d love to try it, but Iโ€™m not sure I could manage it without burning the house down?

Ha ha… yes, it is an option but hopefully you can make it without the drama ? It’s very easy and actually doesn’t take that much time as it seems ?
