My bedroom makeover with before and after photos

If you’ve been following for a while, then I’m sure you’ve already seen some photos of my bedroom makeover (OK, quite a lot of them…) Especially if you’re on Instagram, where I seemed to spam my account with my new bedroom almost every day. If that’s the case, then I’m sorry, I couldn’t help myself. I just love my new bedroom! But because there is a slight chance that you haven’t seen it yet I’m gonna go through it all again. Besides… there’s nothing better than a good, old before and afters, right?

Because my bedroom makeover was a ratherĀ  lengthy process (as it was unplanned), and because I was reporting everything on my blog as it happened, I will just quickly remind you about all the changes that I’ve made. But first let’s start with that BEFORE photos…

Before my bedroom makeover

There was nothing particularly wrong with the room, but it was (there’s only one word to describe it)… BORING! White walls, which I used to love, a quote above the bed and my first attempt at playing with coloursĀ  with that yellow cushion. I think it stopped being ME about two years ago, and only few days after I applied that quote sticker! Typical!

The floor

But what was really wrong with the room was that horrible cheap looking laminate floor! I hated it from the moment we moved into the house, over five years ago. And that what actually prompted my bedroom makeover! Last year we removed all the carpets from the bedrooms and the landing. For some strange reason our bedroom was the only room upstairs that had laminate flooring. And so we left it till the end and after all the other rooms upstairs had their floors sanded down and painted. I guess it was more logical to do it all in one go and pay for hiring a sanding machine just once, but we just run out of free spaces where to move ourĀ  furniture to. And so the horrible laminate stayed with us for another few months. (You see… there is one thing you should know about me… when I leave things for later, usually they are not done until very much later, and after million of new projects that require my attention in the meantime)

So removing the laminate floors, sanding down and painting the original floorboards was first on the list.Ā  You can read about the whole process in my post here.

It felt so much better already. And to be honest, that was all that was planned for the room. But any impulsive decorator like me would agree that it would have been a chance missed! With bare floors, empty walls and nothing more than a wardrobe, this room was not just an opportunity to do something more to it, it was a blank canvas to finally try things I always wanted to try – playing with colours and patters.

Wallpaper

I needed to act fast. Especially after Rob’s quick respond to my idea I stupidly shared with him: “I DON’T LIKE WALLPAPERS IN THE HOUSE” I heard. All I needed to do was to wait for him to go on one of his work trips (and I didn’t have to wait long, because this is basically how he works). As soon as I closed the door behind him, I set off to work on that wallpaper. And oh boy, it didn’t go very well… But somehow I managed to pull it off in the end! You can read all about it in my post “How not to wallpaper” here!

DIY Bed

Then there was the bed. In a preparation for sanding the floors we had to remove all the furniture from the room. As the bed needed to be dismantled, selling it came kind of natural (it was actually easier then storing it somewhere else for when we were dealing with the floor situation). So the bed went on Ebay for Ā£30 and in came a “new” one for the exact same money. Not bad, huh? The only problem was that I wasn’t really in love with my new bed. I knew from the beginning it was a DIY project but somehow I just didn’t feel it…

So three month later and after everything else was pretty much “finished” in the bedroom I decided to tackle the bed situation. Maybe the decision to buy this bed was a bit rushed but I wanted to make a success of it. AND, YES, I DID! My DIY bed with upholstered headboard is an absolute feature of the room and I dare to say it, one of my best DIYs so far! You can read all about the process of making this bed in my post here. Ā And I spent less than Ā£25!

Work Space

Also while waiting for the light bulb moment with the bed I moved my little desk to the other side of the room and created my perfect little home office space for myself. Obviously this was also reported to you, here, on the blog. You can find out a little bit more about this space along with some tips on how to create an office space when you don’t have an office room, in my post here!

Couple of years ago I painted two of the walls in the bedroom in this gorgeous navy blue colour and as I still loved it the rest of the bedroom makeover came down to accessories (which I’m a huge fan of). Starting with my new faux zebra rug from Ikea, new cotton bedding from Yorkshire Linen and a throw from Home Sense. But my favourite piece has to be the lampshade that I’ve made myself with Annie Sloan fabrics. You can read it all about what great fun I had at the lampshade making workshop couple of weeks ago, in my post here. Ā (and if you already have, I’ll be happy to report to you that no parking fine letter came yet!)

Some of the things stayed in the room and some others found their way to our bedroom from different places in the house. Like that yellow table lamp, that I nipped from my daughter’s bedroom. But that’s OK, because she nipped my table lamp few weeks back…Ā  I just love that yellow and blue combo, don’t you?

And here are the rest of AFTER photos…

Considering that this bedroom makeover was very much unplanned and there was virtually no budget for it I think I did pretty well. Total spent including what we did with the floors came under Ā£150. And it’s now my favourite room in the house!

So what do you think? Are you gonna start that bedroom makeover you’ve wanted for so long?

Thank you, that’s very nice of you ? I always start a room by deciding on one colour but somehow along the way it turns into a colourful mix as I can’t stop myself from bringing more colours in ? But it’s never my intention at the start!

The fine still hasn’t arrived so fingers crossed ? My secret is to follow your heart and Sophie Robinson too ? I’ve been secretly admiring her style for years but convinced myself that although I loved it it wasn’t my style… I finally tried it and it turned out it was ??
