7 steps to a relaxed bedroom (no redecorating required!)

The summer holidays are officially on! No more school runs for another six weeks! Obviously that doesn’t mean six weeks of sun bathing on the beach with a glass of Martini in one hand and a fashion magazine in the other. Most of us will get one, maybe two weeks to actually slow down and relax a little bit (either at home or on that beach in fact). But some of us will get none of that at all! So what do you do then? How do you slow down and relax before you go completely mad? The answer is in your bedroom. You can create your own paradise (read: relaxed bedroom) in just 7 easy steps! And there’s no need to redecorate the room! Just reinvent it.

7 steps to a relaxed bedroom

1. Colour

Let’s start with colour! And no, I’m not gonna tell you to paint your bedroom dark for a cosy feel (although it’s true). And I’m not gonna tell you to go crazy with colours (like me). Look at the paint samples or at the interior magazines and just FIND THE COLOUR THAT FEELS RELAXING FOR YOU! And then apply it either to the walls or simply in a form of an art, painting or even a family photo. Just make sure that colour is the last thing you see when you go to bed and the first when you wake up in the morning. IT WILL PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE AND MAKE YOU FEEL RELAXED!

2. Get rid of the clutter

That’s quite obvious, isn’t it? Although I know it’s easier said than done. Bedrooms can easily become the dumping ground for all the clutter there is in the world. And why is that? They are the “guests-free zones”, meaning that in an attempt to  fool our guests  WOW our guests with a lovely clutter-free living rooms we just dump everything in there in a last-minute tidying spree (I’m totally guilty of doing just that).

Invest in some baskets in different sizes for your bedroom as well as living room. It will not only save you running up and down the stairs in that pre-guests madness, but also help to make your bedroom look tidy. And tidy bedroom is a relaxed bedroom! And besides, there are never too many baskets n the house, right?

3. Invest in new bedding

If you can do just one thing, choose this one! New bed linen can dramatically change your bedroom. If your room is rather neutral, you can add colour with new covers, or if your room feels busy, you can calm it down by introducing some neutral colours with new bedding. The choice is endless. My only advise is to always go for 100% cotton or linen. Nothing less! If you want to feel spoilt and have a truly relaxed bedroom, polyester is not the way to go! They may look pretty and often they don’t even need ironing but  when you invest in cotton your skin will thank you for that! We’ve got some new bedding from Yorkshire Linen couple of months ago and they are my favourite covers ever! They are very reasonably priced and the quality is absolutely stunning. Feel free to swoon over those gorgeous colours and pattern I’ve chosen for you here or check out their full collection of 100% cotton bedding in here.

4.Good lighting

Good lighting in a bedroom is a key to success! And that doesn’t mean your main lighting on the ceiling. You have to have at least one bedside lamp (but ideally two!). No bedroom can have a real relaxing feel if you have to get up to turn your lights off and then possibly trip over on the way to your bed. Plus table lamps are great for creating a mood, which is particularly important when you want to have a relaxed bedroom. And your main lights? Just use it for finding your earnings plugs on the floor…

5. Add full length curtains

Curtains along with new bedding and lighting can really transform the look of your bedroom. Obviously when you’re really short on space, having blinds instead of curtains can free up those few much-needed inches. But if the space is not an issue and you want to create that relaxed bedroom feel, then hanging full length curtains is the way to go! Curtains can add texture, colour and pattern and can really shape your bedroom into a stylish space. My advice is to leave your curtains about 10 inches too long. When lying on the floor they will give your bedroom a luxurious hotel-like feel (but in your own bedroom). And remember to invest in black-out blinds so that you will not have to worry about waking up at a crazy hour!

6. Throw a rug in there

Nothing will make you feel better in your bedroom than a soft rug under your bare feet in the morning. And they have other benefits too, like covering your less than perfect hard flooring or carpet! Just make sure you choose a size appropriate to the space or add two or three rugs for a more casual look. They can add colour, pattern or texture to your room and depending on the style they can instantly turn your bedroom into the cosiest and most relaxing place on earth. And it will just happen to be your bedroom!

7.Remove the TV from your bedroom!

OK, I know, this one might be controversial. But I will stick to my guns and say it again: REMOVE THE TV FROM YOUR BEDROOM! If you’ve not followed the trend or the need for hanging a massive TV on your bedroom wall  – good for you, neither we did, or shall we ever do. TV on a bedroom wall is a complete mood, love and romance killer. And most importantly, it does not add to a relaxed bedroom feel! Instead it takes away your precious moments for relaxation at the end of the day, filling them with yet another episode of “Love Island”.

So now you know how to create a relaxed bedroom without redecorating the whole room. It’s only up to you if you want to achieve it.

This post was written in collaboration with Yorkshire Linen, but as always all opinions and tips are my own and I would never advise you on anything I don’t believe in myself!

great tips and I could not agree more with you about no TVs in the bedroom. It is the best thing I have ever done only allowing on tv in the house, which is in the snug and tucked away! Must be stricter with phones and laptops though!!

Haha… I did not mention laptops and phones ( the reason being I use both in my bedroom ?) With that TV rule there seem to be divided opinions, half of the followers will never come back ?

Some great tips here! I love the feel of a sheepskin rug underfoot in the morning! I must admit though I’m guilty of watching TV (well, Netflix on my iPad) in bed. But I am trying to be a stricter with myself on that recently.

Well, I guess if it’s not fixed to the wall it doesn’t count ?

Ahem.. I have a confession to make (or two).
    1) There’s a TV in the bedroom
    2) Clutter. I magically manage to create a pile of clothes on a chair we have in the room, and by Friday it always looks like Everest…
I have swooned over your blue wallpaper + yellow lamp combo for some time now 🙂

To be honest I’m quite good at building an Everest there myself. Sorting out clothes after washing is my least favorite job ? And I’m sorry for the bedroom spam, it’s been on my instagram quite a lot ?

Oh yes a relaxed bedroom is so important – it needs to be a sanctuary! We don’t have a TV in our bedroom, I sometimes wish we did – mainly when I wake up at 3am on the sofa having fallen asleep mid program, but I guess you’re right. New bedding is a must, it can completely change the mood – I love the Aztec print set.

If I lay down for watching a movie I will only see the first five minutes. So for me having a TV in the bedroom is just simply pointless ? And yes, good bed linen is a must! By the way have you noticed my bed linen? Thanks so much ?

I’m guilty! Some many things I have to fix, it’s like you wrote this to tell me off, haha.

Current status: horrible linen, short curtains, no bedside lamp and boxes everywhere! There’s no excuse. Hopefully it will be sorted at some point.

Oh no! Please do! I hope that at least there’s no tv in your bedroom, or is it? ?
